Working at this scale brought a lot of energy to the process. I let that come through in the underpainting, building up marks and color before pulling it back with white to give it room to breathe.

The bold blocks and bursts of color against the open ground are what led to the title. Signal. Like nautical flags, something is being communicated here, but what you read in it is yours. I worked with brushes and palette knife, building and pulling back until the painting found its balance.
