When I was 10 years old my family lived in a 200 year old home on four acres of land. There was a well on the property with a trap door at the bottom that opened into a tunnel connecting to the house. I was fascinated by it as a child and still am.

The two small rectangles in this painting represent those two thresholds - the door at the bottom of the well and the door into the house. The tunnel between them exists in your imagination. I worked with brushes and shop towels, applying and wiping back layers until the surface had the quality of something seen through time.
